Diamond facility at RAL

Rutherford Appleton Labs

As part of my day job, I went to the Rutherford Appleton labs in Oxfordshire to do some work with their ultrafast laser system. I was accompanying a PhD student who is studying molecular rotations and alignment in helium.
"RAL is an absolutely fascinating facility…"
The immediate science aside, RAL is an absolutely fascinating facility, with its most notable feature being the Diamond ring, the UK’s synchrotron facility. I feel somewhat privileged to be able to go there to do research.

I took a few pictures here of the facility near sunset – I’ve always been a bit taken by the telescope featured in the gallery below, and I quite liked its conjunction with the moon in these images. I also took a few of the Diamond facility as the sun was nearly set (I was only about half way through my working day at sunset, as a working day here is how long you can stay awake – 16 hours, as it turned out).

Just in case you were wondering, I took my camera to photograph a damaged gas injection nozzle and was making the most of the situation on this evening.

All the best,

Chasing Rays Photography.
